Racine Journal Times | Racine Unified agrees to stop bus fee for late-enrolling private schoolers

From the Racine Journal-Times:

RACINE — Threatened with a lawsuit, the Racine Unified School District has agreed to stop charging a $300 fee to bus late-enrolling private school students this year.

The details of the agreement were released Monday morning by the Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty (WILL), a conservative legal group based in Milwaukee, which released a statement last week threatening to sue Racine Unified if it did not amend its busing policies by Friday.

“I’m pleased that RUSD has agreed to resolve this impasse promptly and equitably,” stated CJ Szafir, WILL’s education policy director and associate counsel, in a news release. “Whether a student enrolls at a public school or a private school, the State Legislature has always seen it appropriate as a matter of safety and fairness that children can get to and from their school.”
