Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel | Szafir: City, MPS decision harms poor students

WILL Education Policy Director and Associate Counsel, CJ Szafir, writing in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel:

“Once again, the City of Milwaukee and Milwaukee Public Schools have blocked a high-performing school from expanding into a vacant school building, making it more difficult for children who are stuck in failing schools to eventually lift themselves out of poverty. And, much like with the Malcolm X Academy debacle, there is plenty of blame to go around among elected officials. But the decision by Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett to place a $1.3 million “school choice tax” as a condition of selling Lee, a vacant school building, is especially outrageous and merits its own discussion.”
